This week the Falcons played Asia Grand Buffet (AGB) for their first game after taking their first loss of the season against Mendo Diesel. The Falcons were determined to redeem themselves and learn from their mistakes. The starting five for the Falcons was Dylan at point guard, Alex at shooting guard, Tyson at small forward, Dom at power forward and Seth at center. South Valley was not about to lose this game. Although AGB didn’t have any subs, they still were committed to play and try to win and the Falcons were ready to show them a good game.

The first quarter started pretty slowly but South Valley led from the start. Both teams were taking good shots and getting into open lanes, but the Falcons were actually making the shots they took. The Falcons out scored AGB 10-2 in the first 5 minutes of the quarter. The Falcons found way to dominate AGB’s defense and just kept picking it apart. Meanwhile, the Falcons defense was just as good as their offense. Their lock down zone defense was too much for AGB and caused them to force bad passes and bad shots. The score at the end of the quarter was 20-2, Falcons up.

Defense was the key to the second quarter. The Falcons ended

up forcing the shutting off of the scoreboard in the very beginning of the quarter and just steamrolled the rest of the way. In City League, when a team is up by 20 or more, the scoreboard gets shut off and the team that is up automatically wins. The game still went on and both teams were playing hard and didn’t let up. The defense the Falcons was playing was amazing to see. They played good and clean basketball and didn’t cause any fouls for the whole quarter. The second chance points South Valley was getting really made them look like a real high school team. They passed the ball around, had great hustle on both ends of the floor, kept stealing the ball and they were making their shots.  Halftime score…..who knows, the scoreboard was shut off.

When the third quarter started, you can tell that AGB didn’t have as much energy to play as they did in the first half. I wouldn’t blame them either, they had no subs and were pretty much running back and forth trying to stop the Falcons fast breaks. The Falcons had more than 10 steals by the second half and every player on the team had multiple assists. Everything the Falcons did seemed to work out. However, you couldn’t say the same with AGB as they bricked almost all of their shots. With South Valley up by so much, their confidence was high and you can tell by the way they played. The Falcons were up at the end of the third quarter. It was the best basketball we’ve seen them play all year and it was a great comeback game after taking their first loss against Mendo Diesels.

As the fourth quarter came, the players on both teams were just

exhausted and were ready to finish the game already. Freddie also tried out putting players in different positions like Rosco or Seth at point and Dylan down low in the post. It worked out pretty good as they kept making baskets in the paint. Even though the pace of the game was slowing down gradually, both teams played respectfully and didn’t cause any hard fouls. AGB was completely out of energy but you can’t give them anything but respect for following through and finishing the game with no subs. Falcons win and move on to a 6-1 record.

Dylan Burns led the team in scoring with a big 17 to his name, Seth chipped in with 11 of his own and Tyson was right behind him with 10. Once again, Seth grabbed the most boards with 13, Dylan and Tyson were right there with 9 each and Rosco had 8 for himself. Everyone on the team passed the ball around and had more than 5 assists each, but the leaders were Seth and Robert with 8 each and right behind them with 7 each was Tyson, Alex and Rosco.

“We played unselfish basketball today, which was a nice change from our loss last week,” said coach Freddie.  “I know Asian Grand Buffet was short-handed, but we never let the game turn into ‘garbage’ time, we kept playing the game the right way.  We need to learn from this, learn how good we could be if we play the right way.  We had very few possessions where the ball wasn’t passed three, four, or five times.  When we pass from side to side, we get open looks, and today we were cashing in on most of them.  It was good for team morale not just to win, but to win with class.”

Next up for the Falcons, their final regular seas game of city league versus the Dragons X.
