If you don’t know what Magic the Gathering is, it’s a trading card game with its own lore and story behind the cards themselves. These cards are categorized into five colors, which are white, black, blue, red, and green (there’s also colorless which is pretty much grey).  The cards in these games all have a picture of some kind of creature, enchantment, artifact, instant and sorcery (magic and spells), and land (which are represent different environments).  Each of these cards has a certain amount of “hit points” (HP) and can perform a variety of functions, depending upon how it is used. There’s different ways to play with these cards and build decks with them but the most common format is a regular deck that consists of at least 60 cards. You can only have a maximum of four of the same exact card in a deck, except cards that are basic land because their is no limit to how many of those you can have. The way you win the game is you play your cards against your opponents and try to lower their “hit points.” There are many strategies to use to win the game, but basically you have to lower opponent’s (or opponents’ — games have been known to have up to 20 players) “hit points” to zero.  Everyone starts with 20 HP and then your points go up or down depending on how well you play your cards.

So, let’s talk about the cards.  People create their own cards all of the time, within certain parameters of the game — you can’t create a card that will always win and win you the game.  As an avid Magic the Gathering player, like most people, I buy card decks that other people have created and learn how to play these cards.  I will trade cards with my friends to build up decks of cards that I can use when I play….so I just grab a deck to play instead of spending hours figuring out what to use for one game.  I learn how to use these decks of cards well and compete against other decks.  Once you have enough experience, that is when you start creating your own cards.  I am now at a level where I am creating my own custom cards.

Virgo, The Lonely Maiden is a my 6th custom made Magic The Gathering card. This card is a blue Planeswalker that is based off the zodiac sign Virgo. If you do not know what a Planeswalker is, it’s a  rare card that acts like another player once in play. What this mean is that the card has HP just like any other player, they usually start out with a good 2, 3, or 4 HP, sometimes even 5. Virgo starts out with 2 HP. The HP for the Planeswalkers are called loyalty counters. Planeswalkers have abilities that will increase its own counters and also decrease its own counters, and some of them have abilities that won’t cost them loyalty counters. For example, the cost of some of the abilities for Virgo are, +1, -2, and -8. Just like legendary creatures, you can only have one Virgo card in play at a time for each player. The play style of the deck that contains Virgo would be a deck that will have a lot of removal cards so you can really limit what your opponent can play. The longer the game goes on, the easier it’ll get for you because by this time you can start playing your own cards that will help you win the game while also not letting your opponent do anything. I would choose to put four Virgo cards in the deck because of how much control they give you over the field. Cards that would be the best with Virgo are:

Mistblade Shinobi (3 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo because when it deals combat damage to an opponent you return target creature they control back to their hand

Walker of Secrets (2 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo by letting you see your opponent’s hand when it deals combat damage and also returns certain creatures back to your hand

Higure,The Still Wind (3 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo by letting you search your library for a ninja creature card when it deals combat damage to an opponent and is able to make ninjas unblockable

Neurok Invisimancer (3 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo by making other creatures you control unblockable for a turn and is an unblockable creature itself, making it easier to use other creature abilities on it

Ninja of The Deep Hours (3 per deck with Virgo)

  • Same as Mistblade Shinobi, but instead of returning a creature to your hand you may draw a card

Genju of The Falls (4 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo by enchanting an island you control so it becomes a creature for a turn, either letting it be able to attack and let you play other creatures abilities or being able to block with it and letting you have your island sent to your hand other than the graveyard if it dies

Teardrop Kami (3 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo by letting you choose if something should be untapped or tapped if you sacrifice it, either being bad for your opponent or good for you

Icy Blast (3 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo by tapping so many creatures your opponents control making it easier to attack your opponent

Unsummon (4 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo by returning target creature to your opponent’s hand

Kajin The Vanishing Touch (3 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo because whenever this creature blocks another creature, it returns it to its owner’s hand

Downsize (3 per deck with Virgo)

  • Helps Virgo by either making one, or all, creatures you don’t control have a smaller power for a turn, which makes your opponent have less power

These cards will be the best to go with Virgo, The Lonely Maiden because they let you keep control over the field and take less damage than usual for most of the game and will allow you to attack your opponents with ease because of it.
